Easily Get Restaurant Reviews From Customers
These days, people don’t buy anything without reading reviews first. Amazon.com is the world’s favorite shopping mall. Visitors look for an item that is both heavily reviewed and has a mostly positive rating. There is suspicion of items that have no reviews, as that means to most folks that the business is probably new and the item they’re looking at is of questionable quality. Positive customer reviews weigh in big time within the consumer psyche and the convenience at which reviews can be posted means that every interaction with a customer is a potential opportunity to make or break many future sales. These ideas began with the retail industry, and they’ve spread like wildfire to restaurants.
So, should you ask for reviews or not? Let’s review the pros and cons:
PROS
Incentivizing is a great motivator for everything in the world. If you want reviews from your customers, offer them something of value. Asking for reviews isn’t bad as long as you’re not flat-out paying for them. Put something fun together: drop review submitters’ names into a monthly raffle for a free lunch, pick a top reviewer and send them to an exotic themed vacation (think Olive Garden sending families to Italy), have your top chef prepare dinner for a certain special patron. There are tons of ideas that involve a thematic approach to incentivized rewards versus just handing out cash. Get your patrons involved and excited and reap the benefits of a truly passionate reviewer!
If you choose to nudge patrons in the right direction, make it easy for them. Offering them a comment card is one way to go, and you can put that review up on your website, but how can you get the word out on UrbanSpoon or Yelp, two of the most popular restaurant review sites? You’ve got to tell customers where to submit their feedback. “Search for us on UrbanSpoon!” is a quick, easy and non-pushy way to let people know you’re active on that site. Make sure to develop a way to track your review-submitting patrons so that you can reward them. You’ll generally receive an email notification when a review is submitted to either one of those sites.
Posting restaurant reviews can be fun! Think about the power of mobile Smartphone applications: a patron can take a picture of your menu (or their meal plate) on their phone and post it online instantly, even while they’re still eating their Southwest Quesadilla Special. They can then immediately “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” your business based on their experience. This is incredibly helpful to other customers. PRO TIP: Consider taking clear pictures of your menu and your location and uploading them to review sites before someone else does. Doing so helps potential new customers decide if they want to eat at your establishment by taking the guesswork out of what you’ve got to offer. The more information that’s readily available about your business, the better.
CONS
The first question you need to ask yourself honestly is this: “Is my restaurant ready to be reviewed?” Many restaurant owners get antsy and jump the gun, so to speak, in taking steps to force reviews. They may have had a slow grand opening and think that getting “good press” on sites like UrbanSpoon and Yelp is the only way to stay operative. These sites are dynamite for influencing potential customers, but hard selling reviews is not the way to go. If your restaurant isn’t 100% where you want it to be at, incentivizing reviews could also mean reminding people that they can post negative reviews, too. As many small business owners have learned, one negative review that’s boosted to the front page of Google can spell doom for their business. Just like a positive review can encourage new folks to try an unfamiliar restaurant, a negative review can drive just as many away. Lesson: don’t force reviews if you’re not ready for them.
Positive reviews from non-incentivized customers will almost always feel more “real.” So although it may take longer to get a review, it may be worth your wait.
Have you ever read a restaurant review and just known that it was the owner writing it, or one of the company’s employees? How did that make you feel? Most consumers who feel like they’ve experienced a fake review will immediately go elsewhere, with a permanent sense of distrust in that business.
Some review databases (like Yelp) frown on incentivized/paid reviews. They’ll go as far to delete over-zealous, fake sounding reviews in order to keep their site “honest.” In this case, it may not be worth the investment to reward a reviewer.
If your restaurant is outstanding on both service and menu fronts, you may not have to encourage review submittal at all. A new patron should be so floored after having left your establishment that they want to share their experience with the world. Have you ever been to a restaurant where the server was “on it,” the food was excellent, the wait was nonexistent, and the atmosphere was just fun? I bet you wanted to tell people about it. This same theory applies to restaurant reviews: provide an entirely excellent experience at every point of contact and expect to be rewarded for your hard work.
The answer is up to you. If you can solicit reviews in a fun, creative way, that plan might work out well for your business. Beware of over-incentivizing; remember you want honest reviews, not a bunch of fluff. No doubt, reviews are a superb way to generate new business. You might even say they’ve become essential in today’s world of infinite information. Keep in mind that consistently great service will be rewarded with words of praise, so keep your bar set high, your plates clean, drinks full, food hot, and staff friendly. You’ll eventually get to the point where you don’t need to solicit reviews anymore, they’ll just come naturally.

10 Ways To Increase Customers In Your Restaurant
Being a restaurateur in the current economic climate isn’t easy. There remains a dearth of disposable income for many people, meaning eating out is not an option they can turn to very often. With a smaller pool of dining customers, restaurants need to be at the top of their game to attract them. Here are 10 ways you can attract more customers to your establishment.
1. Incentives are a great way of attracting customers, especially during these difficult financial times. People don’t necessarily want to stop dining out, they simply can’t afford it. By providing discounts and special offers, you may be able to entice them to visit. However, be wary of discounting too frequently or by too big an amount as this could devalue your brand.
2. Advertising is another useful option, especially if awareness is a problem or you wish to promote the aforementioned discounts. Think about where your prospective customers are and what media they consume in order to identify where your advertising budget can be best spent.
3. Many restaurants are making excellent use of social media, with networks such as Facebook and Twitter providing a platform to engage with customers in a new way. It’s biggest advantage is being able to learn what customers want, rather than broadcasting reasons why the restaurant is so great. Ultimately, the main aim of social media is not to communicate a better company, it’s to help you become a better company.
4. With that mind, looking at how you can improve the restaurant will be of considerable benefit. Better service levels could be the first step in achieving this. Review the procedures regarding how customers are serviced throughout the entire dining experience.
5. You may also need to consider the people you employ to provide that service. If they’re not grasping the concept of quality customer service and impact it has on the restaurant’s reputation, it could be time to rehire.
6. Many restaurants get the service levels right, but then fall down when it comes to the menu. Customers want choice, but depending on the type of restaurant you are, they also like the idea that you have certain areas of expertise in the form of signature dishes. No matter what type of establishment you run, it’s a good idea to regularly review the menu and make necessary changes.
7. Part of that review may lead you to the conclusion that you need a change at head chef level. If your restaurant is really struggling and customer feedback on the food is negative, you may need someone new leading the kitchen.
8. Alternatively, you may want to find ways to help the chef you have. Using better quality ingredients could have a massive impact on the standard of what is produced.
9. Likewise, your head chef may be crying out for a better cookware set. Older equipment could be leading to inaccurate cooking times and hindering the kitchen from operating smoothly. An investment in new stainless steel cookware, for instance, could result in greater productivity levels, allowing you to improve the menu and pass savings onto the customer.
10. One final, seemingly minor, change that could result in an increase in customers is to introduce a wider range of drinks. New wines, beers and spirits could help improve the dining experience for many customers, so should not be ignored.
Are you keen to reap the rewards of a new cookware set? A stainless steel cookware set can lead to better cooking, greater efficiency and greater morale.

Catering Supplies: The Heart Of Your Business
When you are a caterer, it’s important to find catering supplies. Finding the necessary items at the proper price and adequate quality can be a challenge. Thankfully, we have many options and it’s getting easier all the time. With the proper research, your problem can easily be solved.
Caters need a lot of supplies to perform their job effectively. This is a unique business and requires some special items that no other entrepreneur will ever need. Additionally, the work space will change based on the job. One day you might be serving a luncheon for a group of business men on a high floor in an office building. Another day you might be serving a multi-course dinner for a wedding. You could be planning an outdoor event at a local park for a group of seniors.
Being flexible and versatile is all part of this service. While adapting to the ever changing settings, you also need to provide excellent food. This food needs to be kept at the proper temperature, whether hot or cold. The food needs to be presented well and look delicious. You want to make their mouth water before they even touch it.
The supplies you need are broken into many segments. First, you need the general business items. For example, business cards, invoice slips, and everything you see in a basic office from paper clips to a computer. Presenting yourself as a professional caterer is not possible without a home base office. Other supplies include a fax machine, business phone line, and be sure to hire someone to put up a website. You can’t do business today without a solid presence on the internet. Many potential customers will look for you there. You should also hire a graphic designer to create a catchy logo. Keep in mind that this logo will represent you for years and you need to love it. Also, be sure the logo looks OK in black and white as well as in full color.
Food is the heart of your business. Do your homework and find the best places in your town to secure your food requirements. You will need a good butcher who can supply you with good meat at a great price. Be sure to inquire about quantity discounts. Do you have a farmers market in your area? Visit and make some friends. Available fruit and vegetables will vary by season and it’s very important that you learn how the rotation works. You will also need a backup plan for securing out of season items. The vendors may have some ideas for you. Spices and seasonings are also detrimental. You can’t make great dishes without the proper spice. Invest in great flavors.
Next you will need preparation items. Obviously, this will vary by job requirement. Ever caterer requires good pots and pans, sharp knifes, bowls for mixing, measuring cups and spoons, and storage containers. Invest in a quality, electric mixer. Most caterers are also very skilled at baking. Be sure to buy some high quality baking pans for this reason. It’s so very important that you have a well equipped kitchen.
The proper transporting and serving items is just as vital. After you have crafted the meal, you need to load it into whatever vessel you will use to bring it to the site. Some of those containers might double as a serving dish or you might have to use a separate display pan. You may need to reheat the food onsite. It’s important to plan for this. Often you need butane heaters to keep the food warm. Access to ice is important for the beverages. Sometimes you need to keep food cool and ice is the only way to do this. Be sure to inquire about ice before you arrive since transporting it for a long way can be difficult or impossible. Be sure to include serving items if the site requires it. They may be relying on you to bring plates, napkins, and utensils. Be sure to have those conversations and you are on the same page with your client. It would be very embarrassing to show up with great food and no way for the guests to eat it.
Don’t overlook yourself and your appearance. Be sure to consider this in your catering supplies. You need to look the part, be professional, and still look good. Your hair needs to be secured and under a hair net. Most caters wear a uniform and a clean apron. Consider getting your logo embroidered onto your apron. Gloves are required for you and your staff. You and your staff are your best onsite marketing. Solid customer service skills will lead the way to your success as a caterer.

Why Do So Many New Restaurants Fail?
Number one cause of new restaurants failing is of course lack of money! Refer back to any past episode of Dragons Den if you will and what is the one thing that always trips even the most inventive and charismatic presenters up? It’s the figures, I even noticed new ‘dragon’ Hilary Devey threatening well perhaps not threatening but gently yet firmly persuading one of her latest business partners to create and maintain a set of management accounts to keep a close eye on what the finances were doing on a frequent basis.
Even when I was at university doing my degree in traditional marketing in first year we all had to complete a module called management finance which did not teach us how to balance books or create accounts but to be able to read, interpret and plan from the accounts that we were given and that has proved invaluable into my professional career.
Number two reason for fifty percent of new restaurants failing within the first year of opening is trying to fill a gap in the market that is just not there. When people lets say, entrepreneurs reason their business proposition with they a filling a gap in the market or meeting needs that were not previously being met by existing providers that’s fine – when the gap was actually there in the first place.
If on the other hand you come up with a concept that is outlandish to say the least for instance a restaurant where people have to all wear purple and only eat with their left hand for fear of retribution, this is where the problems begin. If you want to be very and I mean very literal then yes there was a gap in the market, more like a gaping crevice because no one would ever want such a service or restaurant to be in operation in the first place.
My advice when coming up with a restaurant is to carry out in depth research into your target market and in most cases of new restaurants this will be done within quite a close geographical area as you do not want to for instance over or under price your restaurant as both can end up being as deadly to business as the other.
The third reason that I feel contributes towards the relatively high failure rate of new restaurants is the – it’s a piece of cake attitude. (Note the foody reference). By this I mean the attitude that an enthusiastic and no doubt well meaning future restaurateur thinks… well I’ve eaten in a lot of restaurants. I can/know someone that can cook, I like food, I have a bit of money saved away so I think in fact I know I can open my own restaurant, ‘I mean how hard is it’? Classic error, four walls, some dining tables and a larder full of food do not a restaurant make. There has to be some initial talent there in the first place by that I mean, a talented chef as the back bone or enough money to hire in and create the very best of everything from staff and venue to only the finest ingredients and the most decadent dining experience. Neither come easily.
To recap I would recommend as either three things to avoid at all costs when opening a new restaurant or three reasons as to why new restaurants fail are: money, concept and attitude.

What Is HACCP Food Safety?
Do you know what an HACCP food safety guideline is all about? The letters stand for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points and it is used in locations such as hospitals, schools, restaurants, and the food industry in general to keep the food being served as safe as possible.
While there are many standards, and often it differs depending on your location, when it comes to HACCP, your required food safety management system is increased or reaches a new level. It is enforced the world over but more primarily by the United States of America through its Food and Drug Administration (FDA), its Department of Agriculture, and also by the space agency NASA. The latter makes use of HACCP to make sure that their astronauts are given only highly nutritious and safe foods to help in maintaining their good physical condition. So if it is good for the astronauts then it must also be good for the rest of the population.
There are seven main principles being followed with an HACCP food safety standard. The main idea behind these principles is to avoid any chances of food contamination as much as possible. It is therefore stressed that prevention is more important than post detection because with the latter the problem has already happened.
The analysis for potential hazards. Any potential hazards are identified including the steps needed to control them. There are many types of hazards, it can be physical like a speck of dust or a piece of broken glass or it can be chemical such as a toxin.
Determine the critical points during the food production and service. This includes from the shipping of the raw materials to the whole cooking process and up to the point where the food is being served to the consumer. Again any potential hazard is identified during these steps.
Identify the standards to ensure that the food is handled ideally. A good example for this is in setting the perfect cooking temperature for red meats to make sure bacteria and other microorganisms are killed during the cooking process.
Establish the steps necessary to ensure the critical limits of food preparation are being met. This may include the advisable length of time to cook any food, again to make sure that it is safe to be eaten.
Determine what actions should be taken should the critical limits are not maintained or followed. A good example for this is the disposal of the food item instead of trying to save it from being ruined.
It is also important to establish a system that will determine that the whole inspection process is working perfectly. This can be as simple as determining that the cooking unit is working fine.
Come up with an effective record keeping system to properly monitor the whole HACCP standard. Everything should be documented there from all the hazards that are identified to the recommendations necessary for the proper working of the kitchen or of the food processing system.
So there you go. These are the essential principles behind an HACCP food safety guideline which anyone who is responsible for food preparation in any business setting should follow. Get the best consultants in your area to help you in creating the monitoring system that you need.

Ten Important Things That Every Server Should Do
Being a server involves a whole lot more than just delivering food and drinks to a table.
Servers are the face of the entire company. They are the ultimate point of contact between a guest and the business, and the person most responsible for guest experience.
As such, servers should ensure that they represent both themselves and the company well because the ultimate goal is to get every person that walks through the door to come back, and to tell others what a great time they had.
There are several crucial things that servers can do to make the guest’s experience a positive one. Following is a list of ten things that every server should do for every single table that they serve.
1. First and foremost, smile! It is a proven fact that smiling releases endorphins that cause happiness. If you smile at a guest, they will most likely smile and they will feel welcome, which starts the experience off on the right foot. Also, it is difficult for a guest to be rude to somebody that is smiling; the instinctive response is to smile back.
2. Learn your menu! You should be able to describe every item in detail. If you are knowledgeable, it conveys confidence in the food and makes the customer feel comfortable asking questions about new foods that they may otherwise be unwilling to try.
3. Greet each table within thirty seconds. It does not matter if you are in a hurry to get a fork for another table, or have a hand full of dirty dishes; take the time to at least say hello, tell them your name and let them know that you will be right back. Then make sure that you get back within two minutes to get a drink order.
4. When you get the drink order, offer appetizers and cocktails. It makes a guest feel welcome. Don’t just ask generally. Pick two items that you really like and describe them. Suggestively selling an item in this manner creates the urge to try it. Use every opportunity to up-sell without being pushy. It increases the check average, gives the guest an opportunity to try different things in the same visit, and creates a feeling of welcome.
5. Be courteous and professional enough to your guests to remember what they ordered. Never auction the food off! While you are writing the order down, use pivot points, starting with the person on your left and working your way around the table. If it seems appropriate, take the ladies’ orders first. By writing the orders down in this order every time, you will never forget who ordered what. Then repeat the order back.
6. Serve from the left and work your way around the table, unless you are serving the ladies at the table first. Clear the table from right to left. Always make sure that the guest is finished before taking a plate, and be sure to keep the table cleared. Dirty dishes sitting on a table make the guest feel cramped.
7. Follow the two minute rule. After your table has gotten their food, check back after two minutes to make sure that they are happy. Take this opportunity to bring any refills that are needed as well; work smarter, not harder.
8. Always offer desert, coffee and after dinner cocktails. This is an excellent opportunity to suggestively up-sell sell again and also makes the guest feel welcome because they aren’t being rushed.
9. Never make a guest wait on a check; once they have finished (or declined) desert and appear finished, present the check without being asked. Be aware of the table at this point and pick the check up promptly so that you can run the credit card or make change. Never ask if the guest wants change; this is one of the rudest questions that a server can ask.
10. Thank the guest and invite them back. People want to feel appreciated and this is a wonderful way to make them feel welcome. Repeat business is the goal; a steady, regular guest base is the bread and butter of nearly all businesses, restaurants included.
These are the ten important things that every server should do.
Following these simple suggestions will improve the quality of the guest experience and will in turn increase the profits for both the server and the restaurant.
Guests will leave happy and will want to return. Also, they will tell others about what a wonderful time they had and word-of-mouth is absolutely the best form of advertisement.
Be warned, this works in reverse even more effectively; if a guest has a bad experience, they will tell everybody about it.
The bottom line is that people want to go to places that make them feel welcome.
By being attentive and professional, you will build a client base that will be profitable for everyone.

Creating your own business plan is quite an overwhelming project, which in itself is often a great obstruction to getting beginning on that concept for the great restaurant. However if it is divided into small steps they can each be confronted and taken care of in turn. The plan by itself really should not an extremely large document although should possess all of the key essential details about your plan to open a restaurant. If more info is necessary it might be either filed within the appendix or offered at request.
